{DIY} Frozen Flower Ice Cubes

Rose Ice Cubes
For a romantic evening and add a pop of color to your drinks or wine cooling station.
Is it edible?
Most roses are indeed edible. However, many growers use pesticides on the roses, so I would avoid putting these ice cubes in drinks unless you’re sure there were no chemicals used. Just use the ice to cool the wine or champagne bottle.
What you’ll need:
(per ice tray)
12 spray roses (the small ones)
12 twist ties
2 wooden skewers
1 ice tray
Floral tape
1. To keep the roses submerged in the ice trays, we have to build a framework that will weigh them down. Cut the spray roses, leaving about 2 inches of stem, and use twist ties to attach the stems to the skewers.
2. Place the roses, which are attached to the skewers, upside down in their individual ice compartments of the tray.
3. Tape down the skewers at the ends of the ice tray to keep everything from floating when you add water. Your ice tray should look like the one in the photo.
4. Add water to the ice tray and freeze overnight.
* Blossoms, flowers and leaves that are suitable include: nasturtiums, violets, rose petals, pansies, lavender, basil, chive/leek/onion/garlic blossoms, borage flowers, most flowers from edible herbs (e.g. basil, oregano, thyme).
* Be careful - only choose those plant pieces you know are edible. Also, a lot of plants are poisonous. Learn what plants are safe and unsafe to use. Check in library books, online, with specialists at nurseries or botany departments at universities. Do not use it if in any doubt at all. An example of a common but extremely poisonous plant would be the Oleander, common in many urban areas. If you believe you have ingested a poisonous plant call a poison control center immediately.

Blossom Flower Ice Cubes:
1. Gather and gently rinse all of your pesticide-free blossoms. Other blossoms of your choice can be used instead of the roses, as listed below.
2. Boil water for 2 minutes for all the air trapped in the water to escape. Then leave to cool till room temperature. This will ensure that the ice cubes are crystal clear. Or use distilled water that has been boiled then cooled to ensure clear ice cubes.
3. Place each blossom at the base of each individual compartment within an ice tray (or more trays if you have a large party).
4. Fill each compartment half full with the cooled boiled water and freeze.
5. After the water is frozen solid, fill each ice cube compartment the rest of the way to the top with the remaining boiled water.
6. Refreeze and allow it to remain in the freezer until you are ready to use them.
